Subject: To consider the evaluation report of the examiners on the thesis
submitted by Mr. Asad Masood, PhD Scholar in Agri. Entomology
With Reference to Item no. 6 from the
proceedings of 2/2012 meeting of the Advanced Studies & Research Board held
on 29.06.2012 on the subject cited above (copy attached). As a PhD
supervisor of Mr. Asad Masood s/o
Pir Bakhsh Tariq, registration no. 2007-bzag-01, undersigned thoroughly checked the adjustments/changes as suggested by the examiners (Internal/External)
during the thesis evaluation entitled, “The
Role and Management of Bark Beetle as a Potential Vector of Mango Sudden Death in
Pakistan”. It is further indicated that Mr. Asad has incorporated all
the said changes under my supervision to improve the flow of the thesis
in all aspects (minor changes in results and discussion, grammatical mistakes, placement
of tables, figures and references and outlines for recommendations of the
thesis according to Examiners s’ suggestions (Annexure-1).
Based on the recommendations of the examiners,
results of the thesis has strong implications to both basic and applied
sciences and are hereby approved unanimously for the final award of PhD in
field of Agriculture (Entomology) i.e. Annexure-2
Kindly
consider the above mentioned changes/suggestions of the examiners for final
thesis public defiance along viva voice for the award of PhD Degree in
Agriculture Entomology.
Thanking
in anticipation,
Yours Sincerely,
(Annexure-1)
Following comments of the
Examiners have been indicated by parentheses ([-]) and their justifications
have been included (““) as under:
First Examiner s’ Comments
(Dr. Shafqat Saeed , PhD Supervisor)
Results of this PhD thesis are
valuable for the management of novel pest i.e. bark beetle and mango sudden
death contributed 12 research articles in HEC recognized Journals (National
& International). By adopting the management techniques, Millions of
dollars loss to mango industry due to this rigorous threat of mango sudden
death can be saved annually and these results should be disseminated to mango
grower s’ community through Media and Agriculture Department. Based on these
findings, thesis results are excellent thus should be approved for final award
of PhD in Agriculture (Entomology)
Second
Examiner s’ Comments (Prof. Dr. Anjum Suhail)
1)
Thesis results have clearly indicated that research
questions, elaborated scientifically in appreciable way and published in
internationally recommended Journals. The thesis is of sufficient merit to
justify the award of PhD degree.
2)
While some changes are suggested for the
improvement are given below
- [For more understanding of the issue, further integration of results and discussion sections along with discussion on testing of hypothesis] “Agreed and incorporated”
- [If possible, morphological illustration and identification key should be given in this manuscript] “Although morphological illustration of bark beetle was already given in the thesis and now elaborated according to the comments”
Third
Examiner s’ Comments (Dr. Chrys Akem )
1) This
is a well driven thesis on the findings of an important research topic and adds
to our knowledge on the relationship between disease and its vector carrier and
gives us future options for an effective management. The significance of the
findings is evidenced from the publication of these results in different
journals which is a wise decision to publish as the research progressed in a
competitive research environment. Based on these broad statements, I will
recommend the acceptance of thesis as partial fulfillment for the award of PhD
degree.
2) In order to improve the flow and further
readability of the thesis, I do recommend some minor changes to be considered
and incorporated:
·
[All the
tables and figures associated with each chapter/section should be moved to the
end of section as is traditionally done in papers submitted for publication]
“Disagreed as we have followed the style of thesis written by our senior
colleagues and this is marked as approved style”
·
[All the
references in each section/paper should be included at the end of the chapter
section/paper] “ Disagreed as followed the approved thesis style”
·
[Summery
of the thesis objectives shifted from the start to the end off the thesis]
“disagreed because this is requirement of our thesis as indicated in confirmation
letter”
·
[Summery of
outline recommendation as a whole from each chapter should be include at the
end of the thesis and also include
directives for future research]”Agreed and inserted at the end of
the thesis”
·
[Some
minor areas for revision throughout the thesis that will improve its flow once the author has
carefully considered and incorporated] “Agreed and corrected according to
the suggestions”
Fourth
Examiner s’ Comments (Dr. Nadir Erbilgin)
1) Information
resulting from the thesis has strong implications to both basic and applied
sciences. The main goal of the thesis was to understand the role of bark beetle
in spread of mango sudden death in mango orchards and also indicate future
options for an effective management of disease and its vector as well. Overall
the thesis was well constructed and appropriately illustrated and strongly
recommended for the award of PhD degree
2) Overall
thesis had clear objectives and methodologies and was written well but some
suggestions for further refinement of the thesis
·
[Though
the thesis require some minor
modifications] “Agreed and incorporated”
Kindly consider the above-mentioned query responses and
amendments.
